Life of Pi Directed by Ang Lee, 2012.  Written by David Magee.  Based upon novel Yann Martel

Twice viewed Life of Pi to understand film better.  I like topics about cats, household or big cats.  In the film the Bengal tiger, Richard Parker looked realistic enough, although most all of the animals were animated.  It didn’t matter to me if the story was real or not. I’ve always wondered if that could happen with a wild animal like a big cat tiger. Maybe it could.  Maybe that’s why. As I viewed the film I looked into Richard Parker’s eyes, the Bengal tiger’s eyes like a household cat.  I am aware a person’s not supposed to stare straight into the eyes of a cat, but I did it once with my cat Ninja Pants.  She swatted me. Cats return the gaze.

Pi Patel stemmed from a family who had a zoo at a park somewhere in a town in India.  Eventually Pi meets a girl he likes. In political turmoil in the town, the family decides to leave and take the animals with them on a cargo ship to Canada or America.  Pi has to leave a girl he met behind. Suddenly during a night on the ship Pi hears noise. He walks to find out what’s wrong.  He sees a huge storm full of heavy rain and 50-100 foot waves.  At the same time, water fills the ship fast.  A zebra swims in ocean through hallway.  Zebra escapes.  Pi reaches higher level. Crew leaves ship.  He sees them. Pi wants to tell his parents to come but the crew won’t let him.  He can’t.  They push him onto a lifesaving boat quickly.  Zebra jumps from second floor onto boat.  Boat moves in big waves, storm and floats away.  Ship sinks.  His parents and brother die.

Animals still alive swim to boat where Pi sits: tiger, orangutan, and hyena.  Zebra is hurt and lies down all the time.  Eventually hyena kills the zebra.  The tiger leaps and kills the hyena after the hyena kills the orangutan.  Pi likes the female orangutan.  Hyena is meanest of the creatures there, but at same time, if these creatures lived on land, it would be normal for them in what they do, prey on each other for food.

Eventually tiger is only survivor with Pi.

He learns to get along with him.  The tiger growls a lot like a wild cat.  Pi uses a whistle to tell him to come over and makes commands.

Pi looks for food for the tiger.

One time a bunch of flying fish fly onto their boat. They eat the fish. At last they have many fish to eat.

Pi catches a big fish and gives it to tiger. He says he knows he has to find food for tiger.

Huge storm so big nearly kills both of them.  Big waves throw Pi and tiger around in boat.  Tiger becomes sick.  Pi walks over to tiger at his weakest places tiger’s head onto his thigh.

One time Pi’s boat lands somewhere on an island.  He walks on island to investigate.  Right as he walks off boat, he eats something green from the ground. So hungry.

Walks to a bunch of creatures who look like monkeys, but they are not.  He finds a fresh water pond and swims.  Bengal tiger eventually jumps out and eats one of the monkey looking creatures for dinner. He brings blankets to top of trees to sleep at night.  At a certain time, the monkey looking creatures run onto tree branches where Pi sleeps to sleep with him. Tiger runs back to the boat to spend the night.  The animals sense a change.  Parker Tiger senses it too.  They know another presence will arrive or has arrived at night. Monkey looking creatures gather around him to sleep on branches.

At night Pi looks at water and views many fish dead swirling in water.  He opens flower and sees a tooth inside flower of plant.  The whole island breathes.  Pi said it was a carnivore.  The island ate life on the island.  He realized he and tiger cannot stay so the next day he picks up food supplies for tiger and himself. Whistles the whistle for the tiger.  They leave. Tiger jumps into boat to leave.

I loved the ending of Pi and Richard Parker.  Eventually they reach Mexican coast.  Tiger leaps out of boat.  As so many people do, when you are around an animal, live with an animal; for example a household cat, human beings tend to treat an animal like another human being, imprinting characteristics about being a human onto the animal. In reality the household cat is a cat.  She/he cannot behave like a human.  But unlike the tiger, the household cat is domesticated.  Tigers can be domesticated too, ones who are raised among humans since kitten hood. Those cats feel emotions, are intelligent, react to a person who takes care of her/him like a human being.  For example, a household cat knows very well when she/he is being abandoned as when she/he leaves their home because I witnessed a big domestic cat being given away at the SPA.  I could tell the big cat sensed it.  Their bodies shake. Act scared. They curl up and hide out in a corner of the cage.  Our cat Ninja Pants acted that way when she knew she was out of her home element and in foreign territory.  Pi loved that cat although he was scared of him sometimes.  They made it together through thick and thin from being stranded in nature, the big huge ocean for many months.  Ocean has many emotions from moving silent without waves to creating huge 100 foot waves in rain and lightning. They were lucky to be found. He said, the tiger didn’t look back at him as he was carried off the beach by Mexican men the last time in the rescue.  The Tiger, Richard Parker paused but that was it, then he went off into the jungle.  Pi expected Richard Parker to look at him but he does not. He wanted to say, we did it and lived through it together.  The man cries when he said those lines at the end of the story about himself and Richard Parker, the Bengal tiger.

Otherwise Pi would have been lonely if he did not have tiger. He lost his parents. No one else in the world to be friends with except the Tiger. I feel the Tiger knew it too. They knew without speaking in English.

When Pi was a little boy, he believed and said a person can see the soul of animal in the eyes of the animal.

What I liked: the natural life in the ocean such as the whale swimming to eat the plankton near Pi’s boat.  How the plankton sparkled and glowed.

How the carnivore island glowed and looked unusual. How it changed at night he found out.

How the tiger looked real and acted realistic as a cat and big cat.

Pi didn’t want to kill that huge fish, but he did for food for the tiger.  After he killed the fish he felt bad and prayed to Krishna. Thank you for food for the tiger and I.  It reminded me a lot about praying for food when Indigenous hunt for food.

A tiger is huge.

I liked the real versus the not real in the same story.

Blue screen set up.

Love stories about animals.  My favorite.   Lots of favorite films seen this year but this is one of em.’
